The Predator and the Prey puzzle

November 19, 2019

(Pri6 - Sec2 Maths: Circles) Here's a brainteaser for you:

A (insert prey here) is floating in the middle of a circular lake. A (insert predator here) is prowling around the bank. The (insert predator here) can run four times faster than the (insert prey here) can (paddle / swim), and the (insert predator here), hungry as it is, will always position itself in the best possible spot on the side of the lake to catch the (insert prey here).

The (insert prey here) can only (fly / sprint / escape) from dry land. So, is there a way for the (insert prey here) to reach the side of the lake - and (fly / sprint / escape) to safety - without being caught by the (insert predator here)?

Some simple understanding of a circle's properties, as well as the ability to apply / manipulate ratios is all you require to solve this puzzle. Do you think you can find the answer?

Full solution will be released in next fortnight's post.
