Deforestation: How Human Activities Shape the Environment

Human activity has helped build longer lives, safer homes, and global trade. It has also placed heavy pressure on the systems that provide clean air, fresh water, fertile soil, and stable weather. A stark example of this is deforestation.

Deforestation changes more than the view
Forests cover about 31% of the world’s land area, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. They absorb carbon dioxide, shelter wildlife, protect watersheds, and support the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people.
Yet the world has lost an estimated 420 million hectares of forest since 1990, largely because land has been converted for farming, grazing, mining, roads, and settlement. That area is larger than the entire continental United States east of the Mississippi River.
The Amazon offers one of the clearest real-world examples. Large areas have been cleared for cattle ranching and soy production. When trees are cut and burned, stored carbon enters the atmosphere. The loss also disrupts rainfall patterns, which can make nearby farms less productive over time.
In Southeast Asia, forests in parts of Indonesia and Malaysia have been cleared for palm oil plantations. Palm oil appears in many foods, soaps, and household products. The crop can be produced responsibly, but poorly managed expansion has damaged habitat for orangutans, tigers, and many rare plants.
Deforestation creates a chain reaction:
Less habitat for wildlife
More carbon in the atmosphere
Greater risk of erosion and flooding
Hotter local temperatures
Reduced water quality in rivers and streams
Solutions already exist. Stronger land protections, Indigenous land rights, reforestation, agroforestry, and better supply chain rules can slow forest loss. Consumers can also look for products certified by credible sustainability programs and reduce waste, especially food waste, which lowers pressure to clear more land.
