TESTIMONIALS
Dr. Michelle Lim (Studied Medicine at NUS)
"I have been a student at Mind Centre since I was in Primary School, all the way through Secondary to Junior College for English & GP, Maths and Sciences tuition. For all the excellent grades I achieved in PSLE, 'O' Levels and 'A' Levels, I would like to thank the dedicated teachers at Mind Centre who really helped me to study effectively. What really helped me were the structured techniques that my teachers taught me for each subject, for example, a step by step method to identify key phrases in English comprehensions. I found that these techniques cut down my revision time greatly - this and advice from my teachers helped me identify the areas I really needed to focus on in exams."
Dr. Lianne Seow (Studied Dentistry at NUS)
"I owe my solid foundation in Science to Mind Centre. Starting from Primary 5, I was exposed to intriguing science experiments that were not demonstrated in school throughout my time with Mind Centre. These experiments were not just memorable, but they were very related to the syllabus as well. This helped me obtain an A for Science in the PSLE. Continuing onto secondary school, Mind Centre focused on teaching us and enforcing studying methods (mind maps and drilling questions) which I felt was an extremely beneficial skill to have. By sticking to their studying style, I managed to achieve all As for Chemistry, Physics and Biology in the 'O' levels. In my JC years with them, abstract concepts were discussed and made crystal clear. This helped us appreciate the subject instead of merely memorizing facts, and made studying Chemistry and Physics a joy. By using the same study methods I used in secondary school, I managed to obtain an A for both Chemistry and Physics in the 'A' levels. Thank you Mind Centre for helping me Ace in every crucial examination!"
Dr. Wang Wei Ting (Studied Medicine at NUS)
"I have been attending Math and Science classes at Mind Centre since I was in secondary one and the tutors really helped me to build a strong foundation. Through the years, my interest in these subjects grew and I started to improve. In JC, I attended both Math and Chemistry classes. Both Mr. Low and Mrs. Lim were very helpful and would always be there to guide me through challenging questions. They also helped me reinforce my knowledge and understanding of various concepts. I am very thankful for their help."
Wei Ting achieved As for Maths & Chemistry in her 2014 'A' Levels. She attended tuition at Mind Centre from Sec 1 to JC2, while under the Integrated Program(IP) track at Hwa Chong Institution.
Brenda Wong Improved from E to A for Economics (2011 GCE 'A' Levels) and went to NUS Business School
"Being under the guidance of Mr. Quek has allowed me to not only understand Economics better, but also to build an interest in it. Mr. Quek is a very friendly and approachable tutor who puts his best in ensuring that his students are well prepared. He goes beyond classroom teachings by sharing situations around the world. This allowed me to have a more realistic and global perspective of Economics which benefits me as a current NUS Business undergraduate. With students' hard work and Mr. Quek's guidance, acing the 'A' level Economics paper is definitely possible!"
Mathangi Scored A for General Paper (2015 'A' Levels)
"The GP lessons by Mr Lim were very important in helping me secure that A for GP. I liked his methodical approach to the various GP discussions. His dedication to the students by striving to provide the latest news is something which helped me learn a lot about latest updates on world happenings-and that is very important in GP. His model essays also helped me a lot in improving my grammatical errors and formulate sophisticated sentences. Mr Lim also provided timely feedback on my work and motivated me that if I put in hard work and focus on themes that I'm strong at, then there wouldn't be any chance of missing that A!"
Dr. Sharon Lim (Vet. Surgeon) Studied at Mind Centre from Primary to JC level
“I liked Mind Centre Q&A Method of clarifying concepts using a study guide which can be conveniently carried around for study. This has greatly helped me gain confidence in tackling challenging problems.
Mind Centre also taught me to use the Quick approach to work through many tough questions which are provided with good solutions and then take tests to ascertain my mastery of the topic. As a result, I got A1’s in Biology & Chemistry , A2 in English & Physics at ‘O’ level and As in Biology & Literature and Bs in Chemistry, GP & Maths."
Amos Chan A1 for Chemistry & E Maths A2 for A Maths (2018 GCE O Levels)
“I am very grateful to Teacher Dinah for her dedication in coaching me on my mathematics and chemistry subjects. She helped me flushed out my weak areas and then through her application of the Mind Centre teaching methods helped me convert them into strengths.”
Congratulations from Mind Centre:
Amos is a conscientious student who can manage his time well. As such, he was able to benefit greatly from our teaching methods! Keep up the excellent work!
Etania Rai (2017 PSLE student)
"The descriptive phrases definitely did impress the examiner as, there were a lot of them that I used, and some were not even taught in school! Thanks to the notes for comprehension and composition, as I was hardly able to score below 30 for my compositions. Even my English teacher was impressed!"
As I mentioned, the comprehension notes did help a lot, as, while my teacher was going through the passage, I could easily get everything and do it swiftly. Before anyone in class was done, I would finish and get more than 12, which is difficult due to the standard. Really, Mind Centre did help, as I used to get high B’s for English, and since I joined Mind Centre, I have been getting A’s! I even scored a high A for English during PSLE! Thank you Mind Centre!!!"
Caroline Yap B. Accountancy (2nd Upper), NTU (Attended English, Economics & Science tuition at Mind Centre)
"I first joined Mind Centre when I was in Secondary School and continued all through my JC education. I find Mind Centre a very conducive environment to learn. Classes are conducted in groups where learning can be enhanced through questions raised by students and short discussions held in class. Mind Centre also offers tuition services for a variety of subjects, which provided me great convenience and flexibility in attending classes for different subjects on the same day. Mind Centre also has a team of dedicated teachers who are knowledgeable in their field of studies. It was easy for me to approach them when I needed to clarify any doubts in my work. I was taught many valuable techniques for grasping difficult concepts which I continued to apply throughout my University education (e.g. Mind Mapping). After joining Mind Centre, I've seen significant improvements in grades especially for my A level Economics Paper (from a constant borderline pass to achieving an A for finals). I've enjoyed my years in this Centre and highly recommend other students to join."
Xin Quan improved from a C6 to an A2 for Chemistry (2014 'O' Levels)
When asked by her tutor, Mrs. Lim, to share what she thought helped her make that big improvement, she stated the following:
"I think you've helped me strengthen my basic concepts and you kept repeating some of the things in lessons for example keep on asking the same questions I think it made memorising easier. And I feel that the study guide book was a great help too and that you kept on referring back to it made me become more familiar with the facts and improved my self study since I know where are the facts."
She articulated a key 1st step in our Mind Centre method which is the clarifying of concepts using a Question & Answer method using a good study-guide containing key exam answers. Thereafter, students are asked to work through many good questions which have good solutions provided, followed by a short test to ascertain their mastery of the topic. As a result, they gain victory over the subject.
Sneha Mathew A1 for English & Chemistry (2018 GCE 'O' Levels)
“I’m very happy attending lessons at Mind Centre Bedok. Thanks to teachers Chris and Dinah for their commitment and flexibility. I could bring challenging questions to class or even message them via WhatsApp. They spared no effort to ensure I understood the lesson and could apply the knowledge.”
Congratulations from Mind Centre:
Sneha is very hardworking and hardly missed lessons. She manages her time well and always completes her homework before the next lesson. Congratulations to Sneha on her outstanding results. Good job!
Joshua Mission F9/E8 (Sec 3) to A2 for Maths & Chemistry (2018 GCE 'O' Levels)
“I was still not clear about Maths concepts covered in Lower Secondary topics when I joined in Feb 2017. The first thing my MCB teacher did was to make sure I mastered those topics to build a solid foundation for my Upper Secondary topics. Thanks to this strategy, and the dedication of my MCB teacher, I was able to master all the Maths concepts and do very well in my GCE ‘O’ Level Maths examination.”
Congratulations from Mind Centre:
Joshua is a very hardworking and conscientious student who almost never missed his tuition lessons and worked very diligently in class and on his homework. Well done! And keep up the excellent work!
Kathya Improved from D to A (Sec 4 IP Chemistry SA2 2018)
“Teacher Dinah helped me made multiple grades improvement for my Chemistry subject. She quickly assessed my weak areas and tailored her teaching to help me master the essential concepts. I find her explanation clear and easy to understand. Thank you, teacher!”
Congratulations from Mind Centre:
Congratulations! On your success in mastering the concepts of the subject to achieve a high score in your Final Year-end examination. Keep up the good work!
Andreia Ko IB Math Year 6 (2015) student
"I hate math" was a common phrase you would hear me say. I never understood what the point of math was, and being able to grasp all these meaningless mathematical concepts were a challenge for me. I usually always find myself in the lowest band, getting the lowest score in class for math. As much as I would like to say that Math is all about self-practice, I do believe that teachers play an important role in a student's learning process. Sadly, I could sense how my previous tuition teachers were slowly giving up on me, and they made some hurtful remarks that discouraged me deeply, causing me to dislike the subject even more. However, Mr Low was different. He was always very patient with me, explaining things over and over again, never once showing any sign of displeasure or annoyance. He helped me and encouraged me, and even when I told him my lousy scores, expecting to get a look of disappointment or disapproval in his face, he still encouraged me and it motivated me to work harder. From a 2 to a 6 was a miracle for me, and I've been so blessed to be under the care of the teachers and staff of Mind Centre."
Ong Wei A2 for Add. Maths (2018 GCE 'O' Levels)
“I want to thank Teacher Chris for teaching me Additional Mathematics during my secondary 3 year and helping me strengthen my understanding of all the fundamental concepts through his easy to understand explanation and exercise drills. This strong foundation enabled me to score A2 for Additional Mathematics in my GCE O Levels Examination. Thank you, teacher!”
Congratulations from Mind Centre:
Ong Wei has a good aptitude for Additional Mathematics but was weak in some concepts of the subject when she came to us. Through our coaching and her own hard work, she has made fantastic improvements. Ong Wei’s hard work has paid off! Great job, Ong Wei!
Genevieve (2016 'A' Level student), shared the key items done in our tuition that helped her improve multiple grades to get A's for both GP and Math:
"For GP, the newspaper cuttings that Mr. Lim prepared weekly and accumulated by topic was the most important asset given to me to tackle my A level GP paper. Reasons are that these newspaper clippings are relevant, updated and opinionated. As A level students, we ought to have opinions when writing but we often lack the time and knowledge. Hence, the newspapers gave me opinions well thought out or if I disagree, I would be able to craft anti-thesis easily. Additionally, the essays written by Mr. Lim himself were useful in expanding my vocabulary and allowing me to pick up a different writing style which sets me apart from my peers. He also prompts his students and forces us to answer him with claims that are backed up by evidence which gave me confidence in the A level exams.
As for Math, Teacher Simon was very patient with me as I could not grasp many simple concepts and often get similar questions wrong. He always taught me different methods to solving a problem and got me to drill on topics I'm weaker at so as to build up my foundation. I believe that's why I managed to score both A for Maths and GP."
Benedict Lee (2014 GCE 'A' Level student), shared how he improved his GP with Mr Lim's guidance to clinch an A:
"I believe that the best way to improve in GP is to actively participate in Mr Lim's GP lesson. Mr Lim also often provides useful statistics which I consistently try to use while writing short paragraphs on topics tht I am interested in. It is also important to challenge any of Mr Lim's arguments which one disagrees in and to be able to delve further into the topic and understand better the elaborations behind each argument."
Xia Ping Scored A for General Paper (2016 'A' Levels)
Violet: "Can you whatsapp me what practices/discussions/methods helped you improve your GP? That will really help us help our current students."
Xia Ping's: "I think it was the the discussion on the content and structure of different essay questions!"
Ivan Lim Degree in Accounting & Finance (Honours), University of London (Attended GP, Math & Economics tuition at Mind Centre)
"I joined Mind Centre when I was in Junior College taking tuition for Economics, Math and my General Paper. Within a span of 2 months I've managed to achieve a B for Econs, improved from C to an A for Maths and improved from an E to a C for my General paper.
Mind Centre not only focuses on exam results but also guides us through the actual learning process. Not only were the classes interactive, they have helped me tremendously to improve on my subjects. Classes are conducted in small groups where the tutor tries to engage each and every individual and keep up with their progress in class. The tutors update us about current knowledge as well as a lot of side reading, apart from just tackling exam questions. This allows the lessons to be very interesting and helps us want to understand the subjects even more. Overall, its methods of teaching are effective, efficient and most importantly, enjoyable. I would not hesitate to recommend this centre to my friends!"
Bridget Lee (2017 'O' Levels)
"Teacher Betty is a compassionate person with a willing heart to teach. She equipped me with the necessary skills that I did not learn in school, skills which were efficient as well as very effective. Those tactics gave me more time to finish sections of the test, and greatly assisted with my issue of time management during the exam. She is extremely flexible; her capability of assisting my class with two chapters of the subject at the same time clearly shows she is very adaptable, and can handle any questions asked.
The aspect of theory, which involves a lot of memory work, was what she had especially aided me with. Though I had much trouble with POA, she did not give up on me, offering to give me personal, additional lessons to clarify any remaining queries I had before my exam. Thanks to her teaching, effort and constant encouragement, I managed to score a B3 in my O’ Levels POA in 2017, jumping by 6 grades."
Natalie Goh (2020 Sec 2 Student)
Pleased to hear that one of our students Natalie has received the Edusave Scholarship Award of $300 (English Language) for the year 2020. She attended English and Math classes at Mind Centre so kudos to our tutors Jessie and Cozy!
For the record, for English Natalie topped her cohort last year, and for Math she improved from 81% the previous year to 86.75% in 2020. Our hearty congratulations and keep up the good work!
Marc Lim (2020 'A' Level General Paper /Chemistry / Physics student)
Violet: Marc, So happy to hear you secured A for A level Physics and GP. Congratulations!
[19/2, 11:30 pm] Violet: Just heard you got an A for Chem too! Congratulations!! 😃
Would you be so kind as to write a little testimonial on what in your tuition helped you secure your A's for GP, Chem and Physics?
"There are a few aspects of Mr Lim’s GP lessons that I found to be very helpful.
One of them would be the opportunity to interact with the teacher. In my view, GP is a subject where many opinions are welcomed but not all opinions are correct. It is important to form your own opinions about current affairs and societal issues so you can write more passionately about them. However, without the validation of a teacher, writing such opinions can be risky as they are not necessarily “correct” by GP’s standards. I found that sharing my views with Mr Lim (both in and out of class) helped me to develop my opinions and also decide whether it would be appropriate to write them to secure high marks.
Practice is also equally as important. You need to practise in order to do well for any subject and GP is no exception. The problem is that there is no answer sheet when it comes to GP, unlike most of the other subjects, so you would need the aid of a teacher. From my experience, school teachers are much more reluctant to mark and review your essays so it was very hard for me to receive feedback. Coming to tuition really helped me with this because Mr Lim has never refused to mark any of my work despite his busy schedule. I urge you to submit work to him regularly if you want to excel at GP.
The last aspect of Mr Lim’s GP lessons I would like to talk about would be the supply of GP content. Mr Lim mainly provides content by giving us newspaper articles. While it may be unconventional compared to other tuition classes’ notes, I find it effective. I think that reading the news is much more effective than reading bullet points and memorising examples on notes because it captures the bigger picture. You will also often read good English and can pick up good writing phrases from news articles as they are written by professionals. They also contain the opinions of experts, which is almost always considered a “correct” opinion in GP. Newspaper articles are easy and cheap to access, so what makes it worthwhile to come for Mr Lim’s lessons? The answer is that he sieves through the numerous amounts of daily articles for you and handpicks the ones that are worth reading. This helps tremendously as many students do not have the luxury of time to read every single article."
Marc Lim (2020 'A' Level Chemistry student)
"I found that the way Mr Ng explained Chemistry concepts to be very solid. He often explains in a way that is easy to understand and if a student still doesn’t understand, he would try a different approach until it worked. I have never found myself being unable to understand the concepts he was trying to explain in class. It really helped me get a good foundation for H2 Chemistry when I was in J1, the period where most would find H2 Chemistry the hardest as it is a big jump from O level pure chemistry.
Mr Ng’s lessons were also helpful because they were interactive. When going through certain questions, he would often ask us further questions to help us think deeper about the concepts being tested in the question. This really helped me become more exposed to the various types of possible questions in the syllabus and it was less likely that I would be caught flat-footed.
Mr Ng also never hesitated in taking the time to answer questions outside of class. It really helped me learn and strengthen my concepts a lot quicker because I could ask him something in between lessons and not have to ask him the next lesson. This meant that we would progress faster because I did not have to wait until the next lesson to clarify my doubts."
Marc Lim (2020 'A' Level Physics student)
"I found that the most helpful part about Mr Lim’s physics lesson was how he always scrutinised my language. While it isn’t exactly intuitive to emphasise English in a physics lesson, I believe it is actually important. A good chunk of A level physics includes explaining concepts and theories and I think that decent sentence structure and clarity can go a long way. Memorising keywords definitely helps, but you cannot always get the full marks for explanation questions because the marker may not understand what you’re trying to explain. Mr Lim has helped me improve the clarity of my answers, which I believe played a big part in helping me secure my A.
I also found Mr Lim’s real life demonstrations to be helpful. He would use real life examples to help illustrate the theories being thought. It did help me visualise what was going on and prompted me to think about the way these concepts work. For some, it may be better than the traditional way of learning via the whiteboard."
Zheng Run (2020 'A' Level Maths student)
"The tutor's constant encouragement and tips on how to answer certain questions made the revision easier. Also, the method he uses to go through the practice questions were used in the TYS and actual paper, so it was simple to understand and secured marks for me."
Eliav Lim (2018 'O' Level student)
"Hi Violet, this is Mrs Lim, Eliav's mum. Just wanted to thank Mind Centre and Eliav's A Maths tutor for your hard work. He got a B3 for A math....a far cry from the E8 he got in April last year!"
